*FREE SEMINARS preceding the Western Plastics Processors Trade Fair Hosted by The Southern California, Society Of Plastics Engineers Tuesday, May 20, 2008 Anaheim, California
*FREE-SPE-Seminars to be held preceding the Trade Fair. Space is limited to the first 80 people that register for each seminar. If you chose to attend either of the three seminars please mark the request on the registration form. These seminars will be held in an adjacent room before the Trade Fair begins.
2:00PM to 2:45PM Seminar 1: Optimum Molding Speaker: Tuan Dao, President , Polymer Engineering Group
Abstract: Review of the major steps of the injection molding process. Screw melting, mold cooling, injection pressures and cycle times of molding engineering thermoplastics. Proper molding practices and practical techniques to achieve optimum molding productivity will be discussed in the seminar.
Bio: Tuan Dao, BChE, MSME., is an independent consultant to the plastic industry and an instructor at the UC-San Diego Extension, teaching plastic engineering product design. He was previously a Senior Technical Specialist at the DuPont Company, Engineering Polymers Division. He has over 25 years experience in Plastic Engineering with applications in various industries such as automotive, medical, electrical/electronics, irrigation and consumer. His expertise includes project management, plastic materials selection, injection molding process optimization, tool/mold design, runnerless technology, plastic part design and finite element analysis. Tuan is Green Belt certified in Six Sigma methodologies and has a established track record for providing engineering solutions to development of new products from concept through commercialization.
3:00PM to 3:45PM Seminar 2: Design of Experiments for Injection Molding Speaker: Bob Launsby, President, Launsby Consulting
Abstract: In this talk Bob will discuss some key modifications one must make to standard experimental design strategies when the techniques are being applied to injection molding processes. The use of establishment of relative viscosity curves, minimum hold times, and hold pressure considerations will be presented as importance activities that need to be taken before DOE can be successfully applied. Examples of failed experiments and successful experiments for injection molding processes will also be displayed.
Bio: Robert Launsby is president of Launsby Consulting in Colorado Springs, Co. Mr. Launsby is the co-author of four books: -“Understanding Industrial Designed Experiments” -“Straight Talk on Designed Experiments” -“Process Validation” for Business Success -“DOE for Injection Molding” Bob has trained thousands of people in various techniques including experimental design, process control, FMEA, concept selection, design control, process validation, fuzzy control, Design for Six Sigma, and QFD .
4:00PM to 4:45PM Seminar 3: The Six Essential Pillars to Successful Injection Molding Speaker: Suhas Kulkarni, President, FIMMTECH
Abstract: The talk will focus on the importance of the six main factors that contribute to the success of a molding operation. The necessity of Concurrent Engineering is the key. Part Design, Material Selection, Mold Design & Construction, Machine selection, the Molding Process and the personnel are the six pillars to success. Each of these and their interdependence will be discussed.
Bio: Suhas Kulkarni is the President of FIMMTECH, a consulting firm that specializes in services related to injection molding. He is a graduate of the Plastics Engineering Department at the University of Massachusetts, Lowell. He has 15 years of experience as a process engineer. His main area of expertise is Scientific Processing for Injection Molding. Based on his experience, he has developed a custom software called Nautilus, that aids the complete process development routine to production release. He also teaches a plastics and molding course at the University of California, San Diego and is a contract faculty at UMASS Lowell where is teaches seminars for the industry.
